Welcome to the 2017 MLA Annual Conference! This year’s theme is Radical Librarianship - the power of libraries to provide access to the truth, strengthen our community voices, create opportunity for exploration and innovation, and assist our patrons to build a better future. Libraries have always been radical, but what does Radical Librarianship mean for us today? Join us at the 2017 MLA Annual Conference to help shape that conversation!

Filling a Gap in Children's Literature - Where are all the sporty girls?

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The rate of girls' participation in sports has grown at incredible rates since the 1970's era of Title IX. Thanks to Proctor and Gamble, "like a girl", is a campaign that has recently spread worldwide showing that girls can be anything athletic they want to be. We will examine how children's literature is lagging behind in reflecting this growth in sports participation by girls. This session will look at the percentage of female, athletic lead characters in children's books compared to the percentages of participation in sports and fitness and the presenters will share what they are doing to create change in these trends through grass-roots efforts. We hope you will be inspired to participate!
