Welcome to the 2017 MLA Annual Conference! This year’s theme is Radical Librarianship - the power of libraries to provide access to the truth, strengthen our community voices, create opportunity for exploration and innovation, and assist our patrons to build a better future. Libraries have always been radical, but what does Radical Librarianship mean for us today? Join us at the 2017 MLA Annual Conference to help shape that conversation!

What are today's best practices in online reference, and how can librarians at academic institutions improve the student experience in online reference transactions? This session describes one librarian's creation of best practices for a virtual reference service based on the guidelines and practices outlined by governing bodies, commercial entities, and other libraries. During the study the practices were implemented and results about the effectiveness, clarity, and overall improvement of virtual reference transactions were gathered using a mixed-methods approach. Related research literature was used as a foundation for building best practices documentation and evaluation of the results. Successes and difficulties in implementing the best practices are explored and conclusions shared.
